Star MegaDo 4

We interrupt my hectic schedule of freelance blogging to bring you this special announcement. I was excited to be a part of the Star MegaDo4 a couple of weeks ago.

If you don't know what that is, watch the following video. I was sitting next to the host on the flights, and you can see me giving the thumbs up at 1:55 when he falls asleep slumped forward in his chair!

Yet another reason never to travel with a film crew!

New Outlets

Since FinCon12, I have enjoyed several new opportunities within the personal finance blogosphere. I am very proud to have joined the staff of as a contributor to their blog. As a major outlet, they are able to market my stories to mainstream publications. For example, this piece How to Maximize Your Credit Card Rewards at Restaurants is featured on the website of CBS News.

Another site that I have joined is the Credit Solution Program as a contributor to their blog.

Finally, I had the chance to meet up with Ben Edwards of Money Smart Life. My work will soon appear on his site as well.
So stay tuned, things are happening on Steele Street!

Gearing up for FinCon 2012

I am super excited to be a part of the Financial Bloggers Conference, AKA FinCon 2012 , later this week here in Denver.  Let's just say that I have been all over the whole FinCon event since I heard about it, but missed the conference last year. I have been hosting FinCon Local events and  I am scheduled to lead a tour, host a panel discussion, and make a presentation.

I will also be attending the USAA and BankRate happy hours as well as any other events where I can meet more colleagues. So if you are going to be at FinCon, feel free to stop by one of these events and introduce yourself. After all, that's what these conferences are all about!

Steele at the Huffington Post

It is always fun to find links to my work at new outlets. This is what happened to me today when I stumbled across a recent article of mind that made it from Money Talks News to the Huffington Post. First I see the link on their home page to "Ways to save on baggage fees."  Then I go to their Money section and realize that it is my article from Money Talks News.

Fun stuff here at Steele Street.

Airline Gouge Young Parents, Credit Cards To The Rescue

I actually enjoy traveling with children. I love introducing them to family and friends around the world, and I even revel in the sense of wonder they exude during the journey. Yet, myself and other new parents have discovered the most obnoxious airline charge, the international lap child fee.

I wrote a piece about it for Money Talks News, which has since gotten picked up by Yahoo Finance. I am posting all of this here at Steele Street for three reasons:

  1. Educate people about this outrageous fee, and how to avoid it.
  2. Illustrate how my experience in travel, personal finance, and credit cards often intersect in stories like this.
  3. Show how I write a piece for one outlet that gets carried on others.

Hello T-BEX Friends!

Travel Blog Exchange
Last night was the first of several kick off parties for the Travel Bloggers Exchange conference in Keystone Colorado this weekend. So far, I have discovered such an awesome crowd of bloggers that I am just thrilled to meet. Writing is a solitary pursuit, one on one with a keyboard. Therefore, it is such a privilege to be surrounded not just by other writers, but those who share a passion for travel writing online. I have no doubt that as this conference unfolds, I will be discovering all sorts of new directions for my work.

If you stumbled across this site after getting my business card, check out the links on the right to all the sites I am currently writing for. Where possible, these links are to just my writing within those sites.

My Column In Print: Have Miles Will Travel

I suppose I must be doing something right, because my first ever print article Beauty Among The Beasts has resulted in a regular column at Out of Denver Magazine.  The first edition titled, Making Your Miles Work For You, And Others hit the shelves recently.

I am sure that the novelty and thrill of appearing in print will fade, but so far it is taking more than two articles.

New York, Platinum Card Style

Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to be hosted by American Express on a trip to New York City. The purpose was to demonstrate the travel benefits of their Platinum Card. Although I was familiar with many of these benefits, it is entirely different for a journalist to experience something as opposed to learning about it from afar. These experiences included a stay at New York's Peninsula hotel, (which is part of American Express's Fine Hotels And Resorts collection), a private card member dinner reception followed a screening of a premier at the Tribeca Film Festival. We also had a chance to take in a fantastic Broadway show, The Best Man with a truly superlative cast.

Of course, as a credit card expert, one of the professional highlights of this trip was the chance to meet with several of the executives from American Express who make these experiences possible for their card members.
Many thanks to my hosts at American Express for this truly memorable experience.

Steele To Speak At FinCon 2012

It has been an exciting week here at Steele Street as I am going multi-media in a big way. First, there was my recent radio interview with Rudy Maxa, which reached out to over 600,000 people across the country. I have since been asked to return as a guest for his show that airs in Los Angeles on Saturday April 28th.   Next, my work appeared in Out of Denver magazine. For those of you not familiar with this medium, think of it as the Internet made out of a tree.

Finally, it was announced today that I will be a featured live, in person speaking at the Financial Bloggers Conference in Denver.

So you may be reaching this rather minimalist site and are wondering, "What the heck does this guy know about blogging?" The answer is in the top right corner under "Read My Articles At:"   Unlike many personal finance bloggers, I am a full time freelancer. I specialize in travel and personal finance and my mission is to deliver great content to some of the top sites such as Money Talks News, Wise Bread, and Money Crashers. While there is a lot of popular wisdom saying Why You Can’t Freelance Or Blog Full-Time, I am going to show otherwise.

So make plans to see me at FinCon in Denver, and I'll let you in on everything you need to know to make a go at this business.

Feature Article: Out Of Denver Magazine

I am happy to have been published in Out of Denver magazine. You can see the entire article here, called Beauty Among The Beasts. It highlights the Kenya portion of my recent trip to Africa. Although neighboring countries, my experiences in Kenya and Uganda were worlds apart. The article was such a hit, that I have been asked to write a regular column for this publication!

You can read more about the Uganda portion of my trip at WiseBread.

Interview With Rudy Maxa, Saturday April 7

I am excited to be featured on the weekly radio program of travel expert Rudy Maxa.  We will be discussing my recent adventures in Uganda, which I covered in an article I wrote for WiseBread, as well as here at Steele Street. This trip was incredible, and I had some experiences that I am still trying to comprehend. I am really looking forward to sharing some of these stories with Rudy and his listeners, and I hope my readers can listen in.

To listen live online, go to this link at approximately 8:15 AM Mountain, 10:15 AM Eastern.

Tune in on your radio during the first hour of his program. Find out which station and what time his program airs by using this link. For example, the program airs in Atlanta at 1 PM on Saturday, on AM 550 WDUN. Therefore, I my interview should air on that station at approximately 1:15 PM.

The show is also simulcast on XM Radio Ch. 165 from 10am til Noon, Eastern Time.

Read Steele At Investopedia

I am excited to announce the latest outlet I will be regularly appearing in, Investopedia. As a contributor to their Financial Edge section, I am looking to bring complicated personal finance issues to a mainstream audience.

Steele and The Points Guy

I am excited to announce that I will be an occasional contributor to one of my favorite travel sites, The Points Guy. Now there are travel sites that tell you about some new cruise or advise you to "be flexible" to pay less for airfare. The Points Guy is not one of those sites. This is a place where Brian, one of the top reward travel gurus shares secrets on how to maximize frequent flier miles, hotel points, and other loyalty program.

You can read my first post today about Citi is sending out IRS forms indicating that bonus miles are taxable gifts.

It is really cool to be asked to contribute to site that I have been reading and admiring for some time.

Thanks Brian!

Financial Bloggers of Denver Unite

My freelance writing career has two areas of focus that overlap. One is travel, which is a real passion of mine. The other is personal finance, which is more of a skill and an obsession. In 2011, the first FinCon, personal finance bloggers conference was held in Chicago. I was unable to attend, and it felt like I missed a big party that all of my friends were going to.

In 2012, I am very proud to say that Denver will be hosting the 2d annual FinCon convention. Hoping to make up for lost networking opportunities, I volunteered to organize a series of local meetups for others here in Denver who write about personal finance.

We just finished our first Denver FinCon Local Meetup. In attendance was Eric Rosenberg of Narrow Bridge Finance, Anna Newell Jones of And Then She Saved, and Lauren L. Burke from NEFE.  What the four of us lacked in numbers, we made up for in enthusiasm and excitement for being the host city for the National FinCon in 2012.

We are all looking forward to expanding our numbers for our next meetup.
